100 GB per day. This amount of data being transferred on the internet seemed astonishing in 1992. In 2016 this number reached 26,600 GB per second. The growth is tremendous and the slow down is nowhere to be seen. Cisco forecasts that in 2021 there will be around 105,800 GB per second being transferred. That’s 278 EB per month.
The main booster of this number will be video. The traffic of this type of content will grow threefold from 2016 to 2021 and will account for 82% of all internet traffic in 2021. Further developments in AR, VR, IoT and gaming will also play a huge part. And let’s not forget growing broadband speeds because they encourage people to consume even more content.
Content Delivery Networks or CDNs are one of the main pillars of the current Internet infrastructure. They account for the major portion of content distribution. The purpose of a CDN is to improve user experience and provide its customers with a more efficient network resource utilization. This way content is distributed to a number of globally allocated data centers so it is closer to end users, and thus faster to download.
Currently CDNs are doing the job pretty well but they are far from perfect. They’re still too centralized, their limited geo-dispersion reduces CDN advantages in low-availability areas and it’s still very expensive to efficiently scale bandwidth-intensive content worldwide. That restricts the implementation and mass adoption of already existing technology like 4K video, VR, AR, IoT and other new possibilities. That’s a problem. Current internet infrastructure could significantly benefit from more decentralization.
Our team at NOIA is creating a network which enables households and various data centers to share their unutilized bandwidth and storage. By doing that we all create a widely distributed and decentralized layer of the internet’s infrastructure.
Blockchain technology was the last missing piece to make this revolutionary idea possible. Because of blockchain technology, NOIA is able to incentivize its network of nodes by economically rewarding each and every one of the participants proportionally to the amount of bandwidth and storage they contribute to the network. NOIA network is here to improve the current internet infrastructure to dramatically change how data is delivered across the internet.
NOIA creates a win-win-win situation for all the parties involved. By unleashing the technological potential of a widely distributed swarm of nodes that serve as different POPs (Points-of-Presence), NOIA optimizes the way the Internet functions. Website owners pay significantly less for their content delivery service, users enjoy better and more efficient web experience, nodes receive a direct economic incentive to contribute and sustain the network.
